Haldex’s new innovative electro hydraulic differential lock, Haldex FXD, debuts in the Volkswagen Scirocco #116 at the 24-hour Nürburgring Race
Volkswagen chose to test the new electro hydraulic differential lock from Haldex under the toughest conditions in one of its three racing Sciroccos that VW Motorsport entered on the 24-Hour Nürburgring race on May 15 – 16

The Volkswagen Scirocco #116 with the Haldex FXD (Front Xross Drive) was driven by Volkswagen’s Management Board Member for Technical Development, Dr Ulrich Hackenberg and the Head of Chassis Development of the Volkswagen Brand, Prof Dr Stefan Gies, as well as Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Manager of auto motor und sport Bernd Ostmann and senior sports editor of the Swiss automotive weekly Automobil Revue Peter Wyss. "Motorsport and production car development have always inspired each other,” said Dr Ulrich Hackenberg before the race. "An electro-hydraulic differential lock has enormous advantages compared with conventional versions. Now we want to prove the potential of this technology in the world’s toughest circuit race.” The electronically controlled lock combines the positive effect of a conventional differential lock with the advantages of an active, controllable system. This provides the benefits of more forgiving handling and less severe understeer. The Haldex FXD prototype caused no technical down time and showed no signs of fatigue during the entire 24-hour race. It will now be thoroughly examined in Haldex’s development center in Landskrona, Sweden. “The innovative electro hydraulic differential lock is part of our modular concept and all the essential parts are the same as in the Haldex Generation V All-Wheel-Drive coupling that will be supplied to customers for serial production starting in 2012,” says Ulf Ahlén, Head of the Traction Systems Division. Haldex currently supplies several of the major OEMs, Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Volvo, Ford Motor Company, Land Rover and General Motors with proprietary and advanced systems and solutions for All-Wheel-Drive system.
